Runner Dies Shy of Marathon Finish Line

MAHOPAC, N.Y. -- A 39-year-old man died of a heart attack while running a Mahopac race, just 10 feet shy of the finish line.

The Putnam County medical examiner says Jose Garmendia suffered a massive coronary during Tuesday's Taconic Road Runner's Marathon.

Garmendia, of Granite Springs, was one of hundreds of runners who took part in the annual five-mile race.

Emergency responders rushed to Garmendia's assistance after he collapsed. He was pronounced dead at Putnam Hospital Center.
